UFLI Foundations is the main phonics curriculum used in grades K-2 at Pea Ridge Primary. UFLI Foundations, created by the University of Florida Literacy Institute, is a research-based program aligned with the Science of Reading.
Each lesson is split in two, 30-minute sections covered on successive days. That means we can typically cover two lessons per week and complete a progress monitoring assessment on Fridays. Because we want students to learn the graphemes associated with particular sounds, we do not ask them to memorize lists of spelling words. Instead, the progress monitoring assessment asks students to spell and write words and sentences that feature the skills practiced in that week's lessons.Â
Heart words feature some graphemes that do not match the usual sounds. Thus, part(s) of these irregular words do have to be learned "by heart."
