Reading ability is essential to learning, but reading doesn't come easily to everyone. Reading with your child for just 20 minutes each day will make a big difference! Reading exposes us to new words, the structure of language, and it builds background knowledge. One great way to engage with your child is to take a book walk. Allow the child to choose a book. Before reading it, look closely together at the cover and the illustrations throughout the book. What do you notice? Do the pictures show how a character is feeling? How so? Where do you think the story is taking place? Why do you think that? Point to words as you read. Later, after reading the book two or three times, talk with your child about the story or content. How did a character's thoughts or actions change? Did it provide facts you didn't already know? In second grade, students are learning how to decode and encode longer words, including words with affixes. They are also beginning to read for content and comprehension. As students advance grade levels, the amount of reading required to succeed increases. If you or your student struggle with reading, today is the day for intervention.
