Basic number sense is the foundation of all mathematics. Students must be able to count and recognize numbers, understand one-to-one correspondence when counting, comprehend how many items were counted and compare amounts, see groups of numbers without having to count one by one, and compose and decompose numbers. One key standard is that by the end of second grade, students must be fluent with addition and subtraction within 20, including knowing all sums of two one-digit numbers automatically.
Making mistakes is required for learning math!
Kendall Hunt's Illustrative Mathematics program is used in all grades at Pea Ridge Primary. Each unit is split into two to four sections. Students take quizzes at the end of each section and cumulative End-of-Unit assessments.
