Reading ability is essential to learning, but reading doesn't come easily to many students. Research indicates that we literally learn to read by reading.
We teach strategies for decoding sounds and words in print, as well as strategies for encoding letters and sounds when writing. In fourth grade, students are reading for content and comprehension. As students advance to higher grade levels, the amount of reading required to succeed increases.
